if this were on telly, it'd be called "cooking for dumbasses."

Well, friends, I have finally realized what hell is. It's not fire and brimstone - it is a kitchen in which I am the chef.

Yes, tonight was our first real night of cooking dinner. We're supposed to cook in partners, but my partner (as well as the rest of my flatmates) ended up having to see a play tonight, as our professor sprung that lovely bit of news on us this afternoon. I was assigned to see the same play on Wednesday - tomorrow - so, as the last person standing, I was forced to man the kitchen for dinner.

For those of you who have never seen me in action, my cooking skills are absolutely horrendous. Give me something to microwave, some pasta, or even a casserole to put in the oven - easy as pie for me. I can even bake a little (bread, some cakes, etc) if I've seen the recipe and prepared it a few times. But I have absolutely no experience in cooking with new recipes, especially those involving my arch nemesis: chicken. *insert horror music here*

The flat didn't burn to the ground, or anything, (and, for some bonus points, neither did the food!) but it literally took me thirty minutes to chop up chicken, other vegetables, mix it into a stock for soup, and to work the gas stove. Send love (and easy recipes) -- I need some sympathy!

Oh pah, that's nothing! I mean, sure it takes some time. But really, I burned a microwave cup of dipping chocolate yesterday.

I don't know. I can bake a few things and they turn out well: Italian love cake, chocolate chip cookies, broccoli cheddar soup. But it's no easy thing!! Power to you for giving it a go. What did the other girls think?

I'll send you some recipes soon. Hang in there!!

I can actually cook quite well. Unfortunately, I don't have anything memorized... I'll write to my mum and ask for some suggestions.

Like elvenlaughter, I'll write to home and ask for recipes :) Perhaps you could try lasagna- it isn't that hard to make, and is easy to prepare ahead of time. Sort of a step above regular pasta, and quite tasty!

Recipe: Place one teabag in a cup. Pour on not-quite-boiling water. Ta-dah. Food for the soul. Who needs more? ;)

Seriously, how has cooking panned out over the last couple of months? Getting any better? Still need recipes or have you figured it out yet? (Spaghetti is hard to screw up. So is stir-fry - meat/protein of choice, chopped veggies of choice, some seasoning. Done.)

Edit: Urk. "Panned." Sorry. My brain works against me sometimes!

Oh, stir-fry is the best! I've gotten quite good at it over the past two months. We also specialize in lasagna and various beef/chicken taco kind of dishes. My cooking skills have also improved, and that is definitely a bonus.

Any new recipes you've got would be welcome, though -- we're swiftly getting tired of most of the humdrum foods.

Also, tea = life! However, our tea kettle, realizing how much I would depend on the life-sustaining brew, decided it would be great fun to break down completely. So now we're back to heating water in the microwave....but I can still enjoy my tea. :)
